About Us

Nelson Adventure Company is the perfect opportunity for adventure lovers to get back to nature. Our trips and classes are a fun opportunity to learn beginner, intermediate, and advanced paddling skills while enjoying beautiful settings. Your safety is our top priority and we paddle with the belief that safety is the prerequisite for fun. Our instructors are proud members of the American Canoe Association (ACA), offering a diverse curriculum that makes great paddlers.

Our founder, Brendan Nelson, is an instructor at UCLA teaching kayak instruction and guiding. After teaching for 10 years, he decided to open up his own business, offering beginner to advance kayak instruction for those kayaking in Southern California.

Brendan loved kayaking on the ocean for many years before becoming an instructor at UCLA Marina Aquatic Center. As a senior instructor, kayak program developer, and instructor trainer, he teaches and creates kayak trips for the UCLA kayak community.  He is certified as a Wilderness First Responder and has led many guided canoe and kayak trips with UCLA’s Outdoor Adventure program.

As an ACA Level 4 Open Water Kayak Instructor, Brendan has enjoyed leading kayak crossings to Catalina, the Channel Islands, the Gulf of California, river trips down the Colorado River as well as the Kern River. He teaches beginning white water kayaking with the Los Angeles Kayak Club on the Kern River. In recent years, Brendan led trips down the Los Angeles River with LA River Expeditions to introduce the people of Los Angeles to their river and support opening up the river to recreational use by the public. He co-founded LA River Boat Race and was the Race Coordinator for its first two years.
